5th Grade Celebration Kristin Engman & Sara Harrington As our fifth graders prepare to leave Hanawalt and move on to bigger things, we want to celebrate their achievements over the previous six years.
Auction Kristin Engman & Samantha Thorpe Hanawalt holds two FUNdraising events – a small auction with teacher items during Movie Night as well as an off-site event for parents where grade level artwork is auctioned off. Last year the two auctions raised over $10,000!
Block Party Rose Green & Jill Delancey & Melissa Stalvey & McB McManus All Hanawalt families are welcome and the event is free! The Block Party is a great chance to celebrate our Hanawalt community and to meet other families. This year’s Block Party will be held on Friday night, Sept 30th!
Book Fair Melissa Stalvey Hanawalt holds three Scholastic Book Fairs each year.  These book fairs provide a great opportunity to add to your own library while helping earn books for Hanawalt’s library and classrooms.
Book Swap Shannon Musgrave Hanawalt Book Swaps occur twice a year. Students are asked to bring a gently-used book that they no longer read to school. Every student will be able to choose a book to take home during the Book Swap – whether s/he is able to donate a book or not!

Chess Club Christy Antoniou What do Albert Einstein, Larry Bird and John Lennon have in common? They all played chess when they were kids! Hanawalt has a terrific chess club that meets Friday mornings at 7:15am in the art room.
Copy & Distribution  Nicole Spradling Volunteers come in and help teachers and other staff make photocopies of announcements and other information to go home in students’ backpacks.
Day in the Arts Courtney Ihnen & Samantha Jones-Tweedy & OPEN green-click-volunteer-md Every spring Hanawalt hosts over twenty artists who work with the students during an interactive, fun Day in the Arts.
Family Ambassador Program Zac/Sarah Voss & Andy/Sarah McCoy Starting at a new school can be overwhelming! The Family Ambassador Program pairs new families with existing, ‘ambassador’ families at Hanawalt who can help navigate the transition.
Fitness Testing / Field Day  Sarah Lohmeier & OPEN Fitness Testing occurs during P.E. classes, once in the fall and again in the spring. K-2nd and 3-5th grade Field Day events will be held near the end of May. Watch the website and SignUp Genius for more information!
Grounds/Beautification Mike Bell & Amy Dagitz Two years ago we started a new landscape program to help with the upkeep of Hanawalt’s grounds. The district is only responsible for mowing and snow removal. Upkeep of the gardens is up to parents!
Hanawalt Education Advocacy Team (HEAT) Rose Green & Heather Welch Puri HEAT strives to educate parents about what is going on at the district and state level and how their input can be heard. HEAT is a collaborative effort between Hanawalt parents, staff and DMPS administration.
Helping Hands Daneal Johnson Helping Hands is a confidential program that helps provide students with necessary items to assist them throughout the year.
Junior Great Books Dean Grannes Junior Great Books is a 10 – 12 week literature discussion program for students, starting in March.  Two parent volunteers lead a dialogue on a particular story for 5 to 15 same-grade students before school one day/week.
KidStriders signup_now Zac Voss & Erica Holland KidStriders is a school-based fitness incentive program that revolves around the goal of running/walking a cumulative distance of a marathon. Students who run/walk at least 13 miles qualify to run the “Victory Lap” at The Grand Blue Mile in April!
Movie Night Carrie Naumann & Sarah Lohmeier At the end of January, the PTA hosts a free movie night for all Hanawalt families.
Parent Patrol Steve Johnson & Alyson Finley Parent Patrol helps ensure children’s safety to and from school, with particular focus on the morning drop off.
Photography Heather Welch Puri & Open! green-click-volunteer-md We need parents to take pictures of students and events throughout the year for use in the yearbook. Yearbooks may be ordered in the spring and are distributed at the end of the school year.

School Supplies Stephanie Clutts Just before the year ends, parents have the opportunity to order school supplies for the following school year.
Spanish Club Sarah Voss & Sarah Lohmeier After school Spanish classes are offered during the year through an organization called The Language Project.
Spirit Wear/ Hanawalt Store Kelsey Byus & McB McManus Each Hanawalt student will be given a Hanawalt t-shirt on the day of the Block Party. Additional Spirit Wear will be available for sale later in the school year.
Teacher Appreciation Amy Dagitz To show our appreciation for all that Hanawalt teachers and staff do for our kids, PTA provides lunches once a month for staff.
